You See 360° – College Assemblies of UC, 2023-2024 Term Two (Part II)

A total of 13 College Assemblies were held in Term Two of 2023-2024 (Click HERE to read the story of College Assemblies held in January and February). Let’s recap the eight college assemblies in March and April:

Exhibiting Arts and Technology in World’s Fairs

The sixth College Assembly was held on 1 March 2024 at lecture theatre C1, T C Cheng Building, with live broadcasting to lecture theatre C2 and C3. Professor Chen Fong Fong from the Lingnan University, who is also a scholar in Chinese Art History and a curator, graced this session as the guest speaker.

During her presentation, Professor Chen explored the concept of “exhibition” and provided an overview of the World’s Fairs in the 20th century to students. She then focused on China’s participation in the World’s Fairs, as well as the the Nanyang Industrial Exposition that was held in Nanjing in 1910. In the Q&A session, students engaged in discussions about the prospect of world exhibitions with Professor Chen.

Drama Performance

The UC Drama Club presented their brand-new original drama repertoire, “Memory Horse”, in the seventh College Assembly at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall on 12 March 2024.

After months of preparation and rehearsals, UC Drama Club discussed the concept of “memory” and what “memory” means to different people in the 50-minute performance. The touching performance had won the audience’s big rounds of applause.

Career Facilitation Development Scheme Career Talk: Please be Brave!

Professor Stephen H S Wong, College Head, had presented trophies and certificates to four College Sports Teams and four awardees of CUHK Outstanding Student Awards 2023 in recognition of their outstanding achievements in different disciplines at the eighth College Assembly at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall on 15 March 2024. As part of the Career Facilitation Development Scheme 2024, the College had invited College alumnus, Ms Bonnie C Y Wong (Ah Jeng@CR903) (15/COMM), as the guest speaker of the Career Talk. She shared insights into her career path and revealed some previously undisclosed experiences to inspire students to maintain their passion for their interests and fearlessly pursue their dreams. Piano Recital & Appreciation

With the goal of fostering a sense of appreciation for art among UC students, more art and music related assemblies were conducted this term.

The College is honored to have Ms Carol Yu, Steinway Artist and Founder & Artistic Director, PREMIA International Young Artists Music Festival, to perform a piano recital on the ninth College Assembly at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall on 22 March 2024. Ms Yu played a total of six repertoires, carefully selecting six renowned paintings to complement the beautiful music. Following the piano recital, Miss Jocelyn Choi, College alumnus, conducted a conversation with Ms Yu, providing the audience with deeper insights into her world of music and art. The College also took this opportunity to introduce students to the appropriate recital and concert etiquette.

United College Choir Annual Concert

On the evening of 22 March 2024, the College organised the United College Choir Annual Concert at Lee Hysan Concert Hall in the Esther Lee Building, which was also served as the 10th College Assembly in Term 2. A total of 11 songs were sung in the 60-minute performance. The UC Choir was delighted to collaborate with the Diligentia College Choir from CUHK(SZ) and UC Choir Alumni, who joined together to perform “Best Day of My Life” towards the end of the concert. Group Sense Social Innovation and Sustainable Development Award Competition Day

The 11th College Assembly – Group Sense Social Innovation and Sustainable Development Award Competition Day was held on 25 March 2024 at Si Yuan Amenities Centre, T C Cheng Building. Four teams introduced their social innovation project operation plans to judges and fellow students on the day of the competition, vying for cash prizes and seed fund support to put their ideas into practice. 30th Alumni Talk: To Actively Contribute to the Society and to Live a Fulfilling Career as a Doctor

The 30th Alumni Talk, jointly organised by United College and the United College Alumni Association, was held at the College Staff Common Room, Cheung Chuk Shan Amenities Building on the evening of 26 March 2024. The talk was conducted in the format of a high table dinner. The College invited College alumnus, Dr Lam Kin Kwan (89/MEDU), Director of Resuscitation Training Centre, and Consultant of A&E Department, United Christian Hospital, Hospital Authority, to deliver a dinner talk. 2024 Annual Workshop of United College: The Vision of Healthcare and the Trend of Medical Technology in the Post-pandemic Era

The 2024 Annual Workshop of United College took place at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall on 9 April 2024. It also served as a finale of the College Assemblies in Term Two of 2023-2024. The College was glad to have Professor Martin C S Wong, Associate College Head and Dean of Students, being the moderator of the Workshop and three renowned guest speakers to join the event. Professor Paul K S Chan, Deputy Director of Stanley Ho Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases, kicked off the session by providing insights on “The Development and Outlook of COVID Vaccines and Prevention”; Next, Professor Lin Zhixiu, Director of School of Chinese Medicine, shared about “Tackling Long-haul COVID Symptoms by Integrated Treatment of Chinese and Western Medicine”. Finally, Dr Ricky Y T Chiu, College Trustee, presented on his topic “From Developing COVID Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) to Other Rapid Testing Technologies” with us. Dr Chiu recalled the scene when Hong Kong citizens underwent rapid testing and the audience was deeply moved.

The College also invited the students who obtained off-campus outstanding achievements to attend this assembly. Professor Stephen H S Wong, College Head, had presented them with certificates and book coupons as recognition.
