‘Traditional X Contemporary’ You See 2.0 – College Assemblies of UC, 2024-2025 Term 2 (Part I)

The College is dedicated to exploring new initiatives, providing a platform for UC students to access a wide range of knowledges, particularly in the arts and culture, to offer a more comprehensive non-formal education. In Term 2 of 2024-2025, the College will continue with the theme of “Traditional X Contemporary’ You See 2.0” and will host over 15 college assemblies. Let’s recap the assemblies held in January and February:
【Hè The Rite of Spring】 and 【Appreciation of Xiqu’s Percussive Music】
In this term, students have the opportunity to participate in designated activities hosted by the Office of the Arts Administrator, CUHK (OAA), as a substitute for one assembly attendance. These activities include the dance performance “Hè The Rite of Spring” presented by the Miranda Chin Dance Company, and “Appreciation of Xiqu’s Percussive Music” presented by the Jingjun Theatre, where students can also try playing various Chinese opera instruments. The College aims to deepen students’ understanding of Chinese arts and culture through collaboration with different organisations and departments.
【Cantonese Debate Match】
On 21 January 2025, the 2nd College Assembly of this Term was held at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. This year, the United College Cantonese Debate Team has invited the University of Hong Kong Cantonese Debate Team for a friendly debate match, which aims to exchange debating skills and promote the culture of debate. The debate topic for the day was as follows:
“We should prioritise our career path according to our abilities”, by UC Debate Team
“We should prioritise our career path according to our interests”, by HKU Debate Team
Dr Chan Chu Kwong, Assistant Professor, Department of Chinese Language Studies, The Education University of Hong Kong; Dr Wong Siu Yung, Lecturer, Department of Chinese Language and Literature, CUHK; and Dr Ng Ka Yi, Lecturer, Department of Chinese Language and Literature, CUHK, were invited to serve as the judge panel in the friendly match. The judges commended both teams for choosing a debate topic that was relevant, engaging, and controversial.

Mr Chen Ming Kin from University of Hong Kong was awarded “The Best Debater”.
The United College Cantonese Debate Team won the match by 2 to 1.
Eventually, the United College Cantonese Debate Team won the match by 2 to 1. Mr Chen Ming Kin of University of Hong Kong was awarded as “The Best Debater”.

【Anti-deception Talk】
The College has always committed to addressing the needs of our students. Considering the recent rise in deception and fraud cases in Hong Kong, many of which involve young victims, the College invited Ms Annie W C Au, Assistant Police Community Relations Officer (Youth Engagement) of Shatin District, Hong Kong Police Force, to speak at the College Assembly on 24 January 2025. Ms Au introduced the current trends and common deceptive tactics such as false investment apps and phishing messages. The College hoped to use this opportunity to urge all students to enhance their personal safety awareness and remain vigilant.
