Chan Chun Ha Hostel’s 20th Anniversary: New Transformations for New Needs
The Chan Chun Ha Hostel (CCHH) is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and alongside a series of celebratory events, the CCHH will have a new look!
Celebrating 20 Years of Service at CCHH
CCHH was constructed with a generous donation from the Chan Chun Ha Charitable Trust and accepted its first batch of students in September 2004. CCHH is a ten-storey building that provides 329 hostel places and has served more than 6,000 students over the past 20 years, commanding breathtaking views of Tolo Harbour.
“I feel that CCHH is like a big family that makes me feel happy. At the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, there were times when dormitory staff could not come to work, and no one was available to handle daily matters at the hostel. Our hostel student union took the initiative to manage the tasks. For example, when the refrigerators weren’t being cleaned, we divided the work and cleaned them ourselves and took care of other routine tasks that weren’t being handled at the time.”
— Mr Chung Chan Leong, President of the Proposed Committee of CCHH Alumni Association (21/MAEG)
“CCHH takes the motto, ‘United in Diversity’, seriously. We have quite a few non-local students, and they are always welcome to participate in our activities. We are also animal friendly. Some students get along very well with my dog, Rony, and cat, Mason. Some students are quieter and don’t often participate in activities, and we’re okay with that. We believe they do not have to be deeply involved in the ‘hostel life’ as long as they feel comfortable living in here.”
—Professor Vivian W Y Lee, Warden of CCHH
This year between October and November, the residents’ association will produce a short film and a wide variety of celebratory activities to encourage intellectual exchanges between local and non-local students, and the physical and mental development of students. We also aim to enhance students’ understanding of the hostel, fostering their sense of belonging. Most importantly, students can have a chance to relax at the end of the semester. Transforming Hostel Space to Meet Student Needs
The hostel transformation will be carried out in two phases. In the first phase, the 1/F space will be renovated. The 1/F was originally a semi-open activity space for students’ free use. However, in recent years, the number of users has gradually decreased. The College hopes to revitalise the space by providing better facilities to meet student needs and make the most of the available space.
The new multi-purpose activity floor on the 1/F will offer various activity spaces, including a space for dance rehearsal, reading room, multi-faith prayer room, music room, and multi-purpose activity rooms. The music rooms, reading rooms, and multi-purpose rooms currently on the second, third, and ninth floors will be relocated to the first floor, and the vacated spaces will be converted into student dormitories.
In the second phase, the College and the CCHH plan to renovate the ninth floor to meet the diverse needs of students. The Warden’s office will also be moved to a larger space, allowing them and their current companion animals, Ronnie and Mason, to have more room to meet and interact with students.
Transformation Plan
The first phase of the renovation project, jointly organised by the United College and the CCHH, will cost over HK$5 million and is expected to be completed by the second half of 2025, with the second phase to start before the summer of 2025. The renovation of the hostel is on the verge of completion, and it is now necessary to gather more alumni, especially those who have stayed in the hostel before, to support the project with their generous donations.
As a show of appreciation, the College will acknowledge contributors on the UC website and in the college newsletter. In addition, the names of donors will be displayed on the entrance wall or glass doors on the tenth floor of the CCHH. Donors who contribute HKD 10,000 or more will receive a 20th anniversary commemorative gift from CCHH. All friends and supporters are welcome to contribute!
