【UC GOAL 2024】Service Learning Experience Trip in Tokushima, Japan

During the Christmas and New Year holidays of 2024 (from 23 December 2024 to 1 January 2025), 12 students participated in the Service Learning Programme in Japan under the UC Globe-oriented Active Learning (GOAL) Programme. Eschewing the bustling tourist cities, they embarked on a transformative journey to Tokushima, a serene locale in eastern Shikoku, Japan, approximately 2.5 hours by car from Osaka. The students immersed themselves in the local community, served the residents, and experienced Japan’s unique culture.
Tokushima is facing severe issues of declining birth rates and an aging population. As young people increasingly move to big cities, Tokushima’s population continues to decrease, making it a place in need of more attention and support. Therefore, the students went there to assist in organising community activities, engaging with children and the elderly, and infusing the area with energy and enthusiasm.
Even though the journey lasted only ten days, the activities were incredibly diverse and impactful. First, the students helped tidy up the flower paths, preparing for the planting of new flowers in the future, giving the environment a fresh and revitalised look.
At the children’s centres, the students played with the kids, bringing them endless joy and laughter. They also visited the elderly centre, where they carefully attended to and accompanied the seniors, spending pleasant times together. These activities not only enhanced intergenerational communication but also taught the students the valuable lessons of caring and respecting the elderly.
During Christmas, the students organised various festive activities, including dancing and gift distribution, which brought joy and warmth to the local residents.
Additionally, they hosted a 30-minute radio show on the local radio station, sharing the customs and traditions of Hong Kong. This allowed the local residents to gain a deeper understanding of Hong Kong’s culture and life.
They also experienced making mochi, feeling the charm of traditional Japanese culture.
On Culture Night, the students shared Hong Kong’s festivals with the locals, engaging in deep exchanges that enriched mutual cultural understanding.
At the New Year market, the students set up a Hong Kong-themed booth, teaching locals how to write spring couplets and preparing fun games for participants to enjoy.
These activities, along with many other enriching experiences, made the ten days profoundly rewarding for the students. If you also want to join these exciting activities, stay tuned for the College’s GOAL Programme!
