moreCUHK members are cordially invited to the United College Distinguished Visiting Scholar Lectures to be delivered by Professor Jacob Soll, University Professor and Professor of Philosophy, History and Accounting, University of Southern California. Professor Soll will visit our college from 12 March to 22 March 2025.
Professor Jacob Soll is a leading historian, public intellectual and a University Professor and Professor of Philosophy, History, and Accounting at the University of Southern California. His work spans the history of political thought, the history of accounting, and the role of information in the development of modern states. Much of his work has been animated by the question of why succeed or fail, and the lessons these historical cases can teach us. His sage advice on economic questions is regularly sought by policy makers throughout the world. Professor Soll’s works are widely recognized by the academia, and he has been awarded several distinguished fellowships and lectureships throughout the world, namely a MacArthur Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Fernand Braudel Senior Fellowship at the European University Institute in Florence and the Huygens-Descartes Lectureship at the Akadamie van Wetenschappen in Amsterdam.

Therefore, starting from this academic year, the College has newly established the ‘United College Whole-person Development Scholarship’, which aims at encouraging students to actively participate in regional or international activities or competitions outside Hong Kong, thereby recognizing their non-academic achievements. This scholarship accepts applications in both Term 1 and Term 2.
The ‘United College Whole-person Development Scholarship’ tenable in Term 2 of 2024-2025 is now open for application. United College’s Fifth Hostel — Choi Kai Yau Residence will be ready in 2025! We believe many students are looking forward to moving into this brand-new hostel.
Before the new hostel starts operating, we need to prepare many tasks. One important task is to establish the “Choi Kai Yau Residence Organising Committee,” which will be responsible for assisting with move-ins, organising various orientation activities, and supporting the Residents’ Association to create a unique culture for Choi Kai Yau Residence.
The College is now recruiting students with experience in organising College or Hall activities and who are willing to serve, to become the committee members. The successful applicants can reside in Choi Kai Yau Residence for one year. There are 8 positions available. Applicants must attend an interview.
The application deadline for the Choi Kai Yau Residence Organising Committee is at 1:00 pm on Friday, January 24, 2025. Interested students should complete the following online application form and upload the relevant documents as instructed. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
moreTo encourage students to organise new or creative activities, the College has established the Creative Student Activity Award Programme and it is now open for application. This award programme is funded by the United College Endowment Fund and T C Cheng Memorial Fund. The aims of the Award are: (i) to increase the number of student activities in high quality on campus, which benefit all College students; (ii) to foster the development of an active spirit amongst student organisations; and (iii) to motivate students in participating and supporting College life.
The proposed activities should be held between 1 March 2025 and 28 February 2026. Awarded student(s) or organisation(s) will be subsidised according to their programme proposals. Detailed activity and financial reports must be submitted to the College upon completion of the programme.

Late admissions without notification to your respective wardens will be treated as relinquishment of hostel places.

Successful applicants can submit applications for choosing roommates in mid-July 2025. Room allocation will be completed by the end of August 2025. Further details will be announced on the College website closer to the date. Those wishing to relinquish their hostel places should notify the Working Committee on Selection of Resident Students in writing (email: hostel.uc@cuhk.edu.hk) before 11 July 2025.
Unsuccessful applicants may lodge appeals by submitting the appeal form to the Working Committee on Selection of Resident Students before 24 January 2025 if they have special reasons not previously mentioned in their applications. Appeal results and second-round allocation will be announced on the College website on 24 March 2025.
moreDr Thomas T T Chen, a former member of the Board of Trustees of United College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, passed away on 5 November 2024, at the age of 99. The College is deeply saddened by the passing and Dr Chen and extends heartfelt condolences to his family.
Dr Chen served as a Trustee of United College from 1991 to 2012 and as a member of the College Endowment Fund Committee from 1996 to 2012. He founded the Si Yuan Foundation, named after the Chinese idiom “drinking water, think of its source,” which emphasizes giving back to society. The Foundation has been dedicated to promoting educational development and medical services in both mainland China and Hong Kong. In its early years, the Foundation funded the construction of the Si Yuan Amenities Centre and Si Yuan Amphitheatre at the College, significantly enhancing campus life and the cultural atmosphere
Dr Chen was tireless in his efforts to advance education in Hong Kong and Mainland China, achieving remarkable success. In 2004, The Chinese University of Hong Kong awarded him an Honorary Fellowship in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the university and society.
moreDr Lui Che Woo, a member of the Board of Trustees of United College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, passed away on 7 November 2024, at the age of 95. The College is deeply saddened by the passing of Dr Lui and conveys its deepest condolences to his family.
Dr Lui had been serving as a Trustee of United College since 1995 and as a member of the College Endowment Fund Committee since 1996. Over the years, he generously donated to the college and the university, including establishing scholarships for medical research to cultivate top medical talents in Hong Kong and supporting the development of Chinese music at the college by founding the “Dr Lui Che Woo Chinese Music Education Development Fund.”
Dr Lui made significant contributions to the post-war construction and economic development of Hong Kong. He was deeply concerned about education and research in Hong Kong and made substantial contributions to The Chinese University of Hong Kong and United College.
moreHostel Application for UC Non-local Students during Non-guaranteed Year in 2025-2026 opens from 29 October to 5:30pm on 15 November 2024.
Non-local undergraduates wishing to reside on campus in their non-guaranteed year have to submit hostel applications to the College as instructed. A quota will be set aside for them but they will have to compete according to the prevailing selection criteria. These will include (a) academic performance, (b) participation in extra-curricular activities and (c) participation in hostel activities.
Incomplete forms and late applications will not be considered. Please read the following “Notice to Applicants for UC Hostel Accommodation” carefully before applying.
moreUnited College Social Innovation & Experiential Learning Project 2024-2025, Group Sense Social Innovation and Sustainable Development Award is accepting registrations from 11 Oct 2024 to 17 Jan 2025.
It aims to promote social innovation and to initiate sustainable development of the campus and the society. Through professional training and consultation, we encourage students to think from different perspectives and turn their creative ideas into some innovative projects which could help solve some social problems. We anticipate that their projects could effectively respond to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) promoted by the United Nations, and will progressively develop and contribute to the sustainable development of a harmonious society.
The champion would be awarded a cash prize of HK$10,000, and a maximum seed fund of HK$20,000 to implement the project.

The process of student applications takes around 7 working days under normal circumstances. Please bring along your SID card and collect the Letter after 7 working days at the Dean of Students’ Office, 2/F Tsang Shiu Tim Building, United College.
Note: The College only offers ‘Reference Letter for Bank Account’ to local licensed banks under the Hong Kong Monetary Authority.
