Sketching Serenity: Connection with Nature at Tai Sang Wai

Eight college students joined the Fishpond Guided Tour and Sketching Workshop, co-organised by United College Student Wellness Programme and the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society (HKBWS), on 12 October 2024. Participants strolled along the embankments of the fishponds in Tai Sang Wai, immersing themselves in the natural beauty. Guided by a docent, they gained a deeper understanding of the ecological value and history of the fishpond.

During the eco tour, students were greeted by a variety of bird species, including kingfishers, grebes, and cormorants. These encounters provided the students with an opportunity to observe and appreciate Hong Kong’s rich biodiversity.

After the guided tour session, the group settled down to capture their observations on paper. This quiet reflection enabled them to connect more deeply with their surroundings and document their experiences with creativity.

Connecting with nature and birdwatching offers significant benefits for mental health, such as reducing stress, improving mood, and enhancing overall well-being. The event was designed to help students relax and unwind before their midterm exams. Just as migratory birds, it is important to take good breaks during long journeys to go further.
