“Entering the Gate of Liberation” — A Visit to Tsz Shan Monastery

The College Student Wellness Programme organised a visit to Tsz Shan Monastery on 29 July 2024. The monastery arranged a tour guide for the College students, helping them understand the history and architecture of Tsz Shan Monastery, with a focus on its design and the Buddhist characteristics.

The weather that day was cloudy and misty, adding a spiritual ambience to the monastery, which was surrounded by clouds. The environment was serene and comfortable, with a gentle breeze blowing occasionally blowing as the students walked around the monastery

The Gate of Liberation

The Gate of Nonduality

As the students ascended the stairs through the monastery gate, they were greeted by the calligraphy plaque “Entering the Gate of Liberation”, penned by the renowned scholar Jao Tsung-I.  On both sides of the gate stood two Vajra Generals (known as the “Hum and Ha Generals”), symbolizing the need for the visitors to release their daily preoccupations and attachments. The inscription “The Gate of Nonduality” at the other side of the gate further emphasised the importance of letting go of a discriminating mind.

After visiting the various buildings of the monastery, many students participated in a water offering ritual. They gently poured water from a wooden bowls onto their palms and then carefully walked along the Path of Compassion.  Finally, they poured the purified water into a basin in front of the Guan Yin statue, sharing their personal stories and cleansing their minds.
