From 6 to 21 July 2024, a group of 48 college students embarked on an enlightening journey to the Netherlands. Under the guidance of Professor Barry R Bai from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, the students attended summer programme at Utrecht University. The programme offered three credit-bearing courses: “European Cultures and Identity”, “European Politics and Economy”, and “European Innovation and Entrepreneurship”. Students selected courses aligned with their interests.
Apart from interactive lectures, each course featured unique field trips that enhanced students’ learning experiences. Students in the “European Cultures and Identity” course visited Wereldmuseum Rotterdam to learn about European colonialism and the history of Dutch slavery. They also enjoyed a canal tour in Amsterdam, exploring the city’s cultural heritage. Meanwhile, students in the “Innovation and Entrepreneurship” course visited Food Valley to learn about sustainable food processing technologies used by local companies .
Students appreciated the Girl with a Pearl Earring at the Mauritshuis in The Hague, the Netherlands.

Living abroad was a vital aspect of the experience. Utrecht Summer School organised social activities such as an opening ceremony, night canoeing, and bowling to encourage cultural connections among international students. The Netherlands is recognised as one of the most diverse countries in Europe. It is hoped this journey helped students appreciate different cultures, foster creativity, and apply these lessons to their futures.
Lastly, the College would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Professor Bai for serving as the programme adviser, significantly enriching the students’ learning experience abroad.
