The Hop Wai Artist in Residence 2024-2025 – Professor Ambrose Y C King

With the generous support of Hop Wai Tong, events of the first “Hop Wai Artist in Residence” programme, organised by the United College, co-organised by the Art Museum of the CUHK, were held in October 2024.

The College was privileged to welcome Professor Ambrose Y C King as the inaugural Artist in Residence at United College. During his time with us, he conducted an insightful talk and an engaging workshop centred around the theme “The Art of Chinese Calligraphy”. Professor King was the former Vice-chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Head of New Asia College, as well as an Emeritus Professor of Sociology at CUHK. After his retirement, Professor King has devoted himself to Chinese calligraphy, pursuing humanistic spirit. His calligraphy style is strong and unique, renowned as the “King Style Calligraphy.”

Talk on “The Art of Chinese Calligraphy”

Professor King was the guest speaker at the College Assembly on 4 October 2024, where he explained the history, essence, and future path of the art of Chinese calligraphy to the students.

Chinese Calligraphy Workshop

Professor King held a Chinese Calligraphy Workshop at the Art Museum of the CUHK on 24 October 2024, to appreciate the Chinese calligraphy collections of Art Museum and his own artworks and share his experience and skills in writing Chinese calligraphy. Professor King also improvised to write the College song and College motto “Ming De Xin Min”, as a gift to the College.
