UC Witnesses Every Connections | Dear UC
UC Multimedia Production Team | Wong Ka Ho Dave (MAEG/3)
In summer 2024, the College Multimedia Production Team (UCMPT) filmed a new promotional video for United College – “Dear UC”.
In the early stages of production, the team spent a considerable amount of time discussing the theme of the video. Members proposed various ideas:
Using “wind” as a theme seemed appealing,
as United College often experiences strong winds.
How about focusing on the unique weather of United College?
The weather here has its own character.
Perhaps, we could write a sweet love story?
Although love stories are quite common…
If not love, how about the bond between siblings?
It seems pretty good!
These ideas were all considered, but the team ultimately grappled with a fundamental question:
What is the spirit of United College?
One member offered a profound insight: “The spirit of United College is inheritance!” While this answer might not be definitive, it certainly made sense. The title “Glorious UCians” has been passed down through generations. United College is not just about its brilliance; it’s about the connections between UCians, a bond that remains timeless and unbreakable. Thus, the team decided to steer the script towards exploring the theme of “inheritance.”
However, the actors recruited were all under 20 years old. How could they portray the sense of inheritance? The most direct representation of inheritance is passing from one generation to the next. Should we cast a senior actor? Member suggested an object should be used to connect the timeline. This object needed to record time and events, be preservable and passed down, and be clearly depicted on screen. How about using a diary? But the text in a diary might be hard to capture on camera, and its content is crucial for the storyline. So, we decided that the content in the diary will be presented by illustration instead of text. I then enlisted the team member with the most impressive drawing skills to draw the diary.
Under the scorching sun, the team went back and forth on the UC stair for filming.
The team tried many angles and filming techniques, all to present the best “playing volleyball” scene.
//The main characters of “Dear UC”, 心澄and 大凱, are a father-daughter duo, they are both students of United College with 30 years interval. They both had wonderful times at United College. 大凱drew in his diary every day, whether walking, making props, or studying. He cherished every moment at United College and wanted to record them for future reminiscence. This diary reappeared 30 years later when 心澄was tidying up at home. She wondered why her father used his clumsy drawing skills to document his college life but found it intriguing. She decided to take her father back to United College. Finally, 心澄 returned to her favourite rooftop, reminiscing about her time at United College, while 大凱took a photo of her.//
Who played the adult version of 大凱 in the video? He was an actor introduced by an alumnus of United College. A team member had previously collaborated with this alumnus, who kindly helped with the casting. The team wanted to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who had supported us along the way, and to thank each actor and team member for their dedication and effort. Because everyone was willing to help with the filming during the summer, the UCMPT was able to complete this project. The team is delighted that the video has been well-received by everyone (⁎˃ᴗ˂⁎)
