Dr Thomas T T Chen, a former member of the Board of Trustees of United College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, passed away on 5 November 2024, at the age of 99. The College is deeply saddened by the passing and Dr Chen and extends heartfelt condolences to his family.
Dr Chen served as a Trustee of United College from 1991 to 2012 and as a member of the College Endowment Fund Committee from 1996 to 2012. He founded the Si Yuan Foundation, named after the Chinese idiom “drinking water, think of its source,” which emphasizes giving back to society. The Foundation has been dedicated to promoting educational development and medical services in both mainland China and Hong Kong. In its early years, the Foundation funded the construction of the Si Yuan Amenities Centre and Si Yuan Amphitheatre at the College, significantly enhancing campus life and the cultural atmosphere
Dr Chen was tireless in his efforts to advance education in Hong Kong and Mainland China, achieving remarkable success. In 2004, The Chinese University of Hong Kong awarded him an Honorary Fellowship in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the university and society.

moreDr Lui Che Woo, a member of the Board of Trustees of United College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, passed away on 7 November 2024, at the age of 95. The College is deeply saddened by the passing of Dr Lui and conveys its deepest condolences to his family.
Dr Lui had been serving as a Trustee of United College since 1995 and as a member of the College Endowment Fund Committee since 1996. Over the years, he generously donated to the college and the university, including establishing scholarships for medical research to cultivate top medical talents in Hong Kong and supporting the development of Chinese music at the college by founding the “Dr Lui Che Woo Chinese Music Education Development Fund.”
Dr Lui made significant contributions to the post-war construction and economic development of Hong Kong. He was deeply concerned about education and research in Hong Kong and made substantial contributions to The Chinese University of Hong Kong and United College.

United College Student Wellness Support Programme has organized UChum—College Peer Support Ambassadors. The aim is to recruit those who are willing to be companions to others, organizing various activities for fellow students to alleviate stress from life and studies, and to support each other on the journey of growth.
Becoming a member of UChum, you need to
• Regularly organize service projects/activities, produce related short videos, manage UChum social platforms (@uc_chummy), etc., to raise awareness of mental health among college staff and students
• Assist the college in organizing activities related to mental and physical health
• Help new students or peers adapt to and integrate into university life
Upon Completion of the Service Plan:
• Receive a “Basic Mental Health First Aid Course” certificate
• Be awarded a certificate of commendation from the college
• Outstanding members may be nominated for college scholarships and/or CUHK Outstanding Student Awards
• Have the opportunity to be recommended for internships related to mental health with local organizations
Applicants may be invited to attend an interview.
The tentative interview date is the afternoon of December 3, 2024. Please reserve this time but let us know if you have any difficulties. The service period for selected students will be from January 2025 to January 2026, during which they must participate in the designated activities.

This scheme provides financial sponsorship as “seed money” to staff members of academic departments and units of the University to organise academic conferences in Hong Kong. All full-time teaching staff of United College are welcome to apply.
The application deadline is 30 November 2024 (Sat) and the result will be announced latest in early January 2025.
moreThis scheme encourages staff members to attend and present research papers at international conferences. Subsidies normally cover registration fees and travel/accommodation expenses. The maximum grant amount for each application is HK$8,000. A staff member may receive a total up to HK$10,000 for attending more than one conference in each financial year (July-June).
Applicants must apply for the grant prior to attending the conference.
The application deadline is 30 November 2024 (Saturday) and the result will be announced in January 2025.
moreHostel Application for UC Non-local Students during Non-guaranteed Year in 2025-2026 opens from 29 October to 5:30pm on 15 November 2024.
Non-local undergraduates wishing to reside on campus in their non-guaranteed year have to submit hostel applications to the College as instructed. A quota will be set aside for them but they will have to compete according to the prevailing selection criteria. These will include (a) academic performance, (b) participation in extra-curricular activities and (c) participation in hostel activities.
Incomplete forms and late applications will not be considered. Please read the following “Notice to Applicants for UC Hostel Accommodation” carefully before applying.
moreTo encourage students to organise and participate in arts and cultural activities, a new scheme was kicked started. Students can plan any activity with artistic or cultural elements for College’s review, and subsidy could be provided for the event if your application is successful.
Application Details:
Students or student groups must plan to hold the event between 1 January, and 31 May2025. The winners or units will be subsidised according to their programme proposals. Expenses will be reimbursed based on actual expenses , and the winning individuals or groups must submit an activity and financial report to the College.
moreThe award is established for encouraging students to participate in the Chinese classical art activities during leisure time, discovering and cultivating talents in this field. Details of application are as follows.
Entry Submission:
Submit an entry related to traditional Chinese arts and culture with an interpretation in 200 words, including suggestions on how the College should promote this type of Chinese art.
The content and format of the entry shall include but not limited to Chinese calligraphy, literature, paper-cutting, painting, opera, dance, Guoshu, music, etc. For performance (such as dance, music, Guoshu etc.), participants must submit a performance video not longer than 20 minutes.
Yearly Awards:
Grand Award: 2 (Cash prize of HKD$ 3,000 each)
Finalists: 10 (Cash prize of HKD$ 200 each)
Application:
Students should fill in the web form and upload their artworks. The original artwork should be submitted to the Dean of Students’ Office by 20 December 2024, 12:00nn (not applicable to performance art entries). Late submission will not be accepted. The result will be announced at late January 2025. All UC students are welcome.

United College Social Innovation & Experiential Learning Project 2024-2025, Group Sense Social Innovation and Sustainable Development Award is accepting registrations from 11 Oct 2024 to 8 Jan 2025.
It aims to promote social innovation and to initiate sustainable development of the campus and the society. Through professional training and consultation, we encourage students to think from different perspectives and turn their creative ideas into some innovative projects which could help solve some social problems. We anticipate that their projects could effectively respond to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) promoted by the United Nations, and will progressively develop and contribute to the sustainable development of a harmonious society.
The champion would be awarded a cash prize of HK$10,000, and a maximum seed fund of HK$20,000 to implement the project.

The Certifying Letter issued by the College now accepts “online application“. Student are required to submit the completed application form and related information. The process of student applications takes around 7 working days under normal circumstances. Please bring along your SID card and collect the Letter after 7 working days at the Dean of Students’ Office, 2/F Tsang Shiu Tim Building, United College.
Note: The College only offers ‘Reference Letter for Bank Account’ to local licensed banks under the Hong Kong Monetary Authority.
